Costa de la Luz GOLF
The Costa de la Luz is booming. Traditionally known for its golden sandy beaches, a lot of Europeans are slowly but surely discovering its fantastic greens as well.The opening of the new motorway connecting Jerez to Los Barrios, and from there linking to Málaga, will bring many more golf courses to the province of Cádiz, within easier reach for golfers on the Costa del Sol.
Following is a mini review of some of the best golf courses in the area:

This Belgian development is the latest addition in the courses in the Cádiz region. The course, designed by golf architect Baron Paul Rolin, opened in July 2001, and is situated on the top of a hill with spectacular views overlooking the town of Benalup.
It is an environment friendly course, and is located in a reasonably open area with many lakes which makes play quite challenging. Visitors are welcomed with Belgian hospitality, the first drink is on the house and lunch is included in the green fee!
DEHESA MONTENMEDIO GOLF & COUtNTRY CLUB

Dehesa Montenmedio is situated left of the N340 towards the sea, close to Tarifa. The course, designed by Alejandro Maldonado, stretches out in natural surroundings. It opened in 1996, and is set up with the intention to offer a playable 18-hole course where one can afford to be a little less accurate from the tee. Dehesa Montenmedio is well worth a visit!

The Novo Sancti Petri Golf Club complex now offers 36 holes. The sea pines course has the front 9 holes with pine tree lined fairways, and the back nine has spectacular views across the Atlantic Ocean. The centre golf course has an abundance of vegetation. There are plenty of water hazards and bunkers to test even the best of golfers. This Par 72 course was designed by Seve Ballesteros. Soft spikes only.

El Campano opened in 1985. It is settled in a private urbanization next to the N340 between Algeciras and Cádiz, close to Chiclana de la Frontera. It offers a reasonably flat 9-hole par 70 course where accuracy is needed on the narrow fairways. The main feature of the course is its careful design. It encourages one to hit a wide variety of strokes and use a firm hand rather than pure strength on your shots.
The surrounding scenery is amazing. The Golf Academy offers packages for both beginners and advanced players including a free introduction to the game.
CLUB DE GOLF COSTA BALLENA

Designed in 1994 and 1999 by US Masters Champion and Ryder Cup hero, José María Olazábal, Costa Ballena is situated in the heart of the equal-named residential area between Rota and Chipiona, close to Cádiz. The course, which opened in 1997, is flat, easy to walk and very playable. The new clubhouse opened in April 2001. Costa Ballena also offers an executive 9-hole par three course and superb facilities.
CLUB DE GOLF VISTA HERMOSA

Vista Hermosa, located north of Cádiz near Puerto de Santa María, is a 9-hole course that opened in 1975. It is a typical members club in the heart of the upper class Vista Hermosa development.
The course is beautiful, and can be best described as a park style course. It is tricky to play with its narrow fairways, plenty of trees, American style water hazards and the frequent Levante wind. The holes at Vista Hermosa provide a serious challenge for any golfer. Another 9 holes are planned.
GOLF EL PUERTO

The golf course El Puerto stretches out in a modern residential area near the town of El Puerto de Santa María. The course, designed by former golf champion Manuel Piñero, is rather flat with gentle slopes. This 18-hole course is enjoyable for players of all levels, and even suitable for professional championships.
The Clubhouse and the Hotel are on the highest point of the course next to the tees of the 1st and 10th and the greens of the 9th and 18th. The facilities include a modern practise course with greens and bunkers and a chipping area.
MONTECASTILLO HOTEL AND GOLF RESORT

Montecastillo, designed by Jack Nicklaus, is located near Jerez de la Frontera next to the Formula 1 Grand Prix track. It opened in 1992, and is a beautiful, reasonably undulated course with artistically placed lakes and spectacular elevated trees. The finishing 3 holes guarantee thrilling moments, and the tee box is situated on top of a hill.
Montecasillo hosted the 1994 and 1996 Turespa–a Masters Open and has been the venue for the always exciting final of the European PGA tour, the Volvo Masters, from 1997 til 2001. The clubhouse, golf shop and caddy master are accommodated in an impressive castle. This course has been recently voted one of the 50 best golf courses in Europe.
