Just off the coast of Chiclana, on the small island of Sanct-Petri, the Phoenicians built the famous Hercules Temple.

In the 12th century, the lighthouse and the castle of Sancti-Petri were built over its ruins.

In 1303, King Fernando IV handed the town of Chiclana over to the Duke of Medina Sidonia, who boosted its resettlement and its economy by exploiting the riches of its orchards and waters. In the 18th century, the town underwent a second period of prosperity thanks to the American trade in the Bay of Cádiz.

Chiclana de la Frontera has always lived from its agriculture, vine growing and wine business in general. In 1876, the town received the title of city.
