Baelo Claudio: the roman ruins of bolonia

Related Links

The history of Bolonia is strongly linked to that of Baelo Claudio. This archaeological roman site is very close to Bolonia and was unearthed in 1917. It was built according to the classical rule of Rome, and the style of the city conformed to a perfect urban plan. These ruins are the best-known example of a well-preserved Roman city. Baelo Claudio was founded around the end of the first century BC, and was one of the most important cities in the framework of Andalusian Rome, under the rule of Claudius Cesar.

In the first century AD the city was raised to Roman municipality status by Emperor Claudio.

It is said that Baelio was the administrative centre for the surrounding coastal towns, and its economy worked around the fish industry. The causes for Baelio Claudio's decay are not quite clear, but factors such as an economical and social crisis together with an earthquake did not help.
