Alcalá de los Gazules is ideally located...

...as it lies between the sea and mountain.

It is just 23 kilometres east of the village of Medina Sidonia.

The town centre is quite compact and small. It is a maze of uneven streets, plazas and dazzling whitewashed walls. There aren't as many restaurants and bars as other towns and villages on the coast, and you are unlikely to walk into a restaurant here and find a menu in English. But maybe that's precisely its charm.

Around the town, archaeologists have found many paintings, engravings and even remains of various civilizations dating back to the Neolithic period.
